Security Camera Power Supply Buying Tips

Picture
Every security camera system requires a power supply
Every camera you have that is associated with your surveillance system, must have power to operate. Keep in mind that each individual security camera can require a different amount to power it operate correctly. When looking over the specifications of a camera look at the section labeled; Power Consumption, this will tell you the voltage required and well as how many milliamps that camera must have to operate optimally. If you have security cameras that require 12vlts and 350ma draw, you are required to have a 12 volt power supply that at least pushes out 350ma. 12 volt power supplies may come in a 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000ma outputs.

The next thing to keep in mind is if you have multiple cameras and would like to go with a power supply that can power multiple cameras at once make sure each channel can handle each camera you place on the unit. If you have security cameras that are typically located more than 800-1000ft away from the DVR it is highly recommended that you consider a independent power source for that particular camera.

Another important tip to remember is to look at your power supply's specifications and double check that it is a regulated power supply. If it is, that feature gives the supply the ability, if it outputs 500ma and your camera only needs 350ma, to regulates the milliamps being supplied to the security cameras. This is great because it prevents you from over-powering the camera causing it to overheat or other disasters.
